Week 3: What is Your Quantitative Inquiry Question?
May 23, 2017
As of today, I am still very stuck and have no firm idea on what I want to do for my inquiry lesson. The first potential idea that came to my mind was how much waste we reduce when drinking water from a reusable water bottle vs. a one-time use water container? Since I have a physical education background, I initially wanted to do something with nutrition and calculating nutrition we consume daily but was having a difficult time relating it to environmental science. Therefore, the whole water consumption was what I came up with. The only reason why I am hesitant to do this as my inquiry project is because it isn’t new, and I felt like it is something that had been done before. In addition, I think that many already have the idea that yes, we can reduce waste when using our own re-usable water bottles and even taking our own coffee mugs to get coffee from the store instead of using paper cups. Therefore, I feel like there is still a need to brainstorm other ideas on how I can relate other aspects of physical education into environmental science. A second idea would be modes of transportation. How much we reduce in the production of carbon dioxide when we choose to transit vs. take the car? In addition, take this to a larger scale and see how much carbon dioxide we reduce if everyone transits vs. driving a car. I can integrate physical education by incorporating energy expenditure when transiting (more time to walk) vs. taking a vehicle. However, for the same reasons as the first idea, I felt that this was not new.
I recently saw a video on Facebook where it talked about plastic use, and how there is a large amount of plastic that slips through the cracks and is not disposed of properly. These plastics then end up in our ocean where they become harmful to the environment as well as the animals. The video continues to state that because plastic is mad made, there really is no natural

way for these plastics to decompose therefore they just sit there and continue to accumulate. Since I am a huge animal lover this video instantly captured my attention and something I want to continue to investigate further. For one of my other classes I was introduced to an infographic, not really knowing what it was I googled and found the following image. I felt like it was a sign that this is the inquiry I was meant to do, now it is just a matter figuring out how to incorporate the quantitative portion.
This is important to me because I genuinely love all animals seeing anthropogenic activities destroying their habitat and causing harm because of something we can control is sad. I am not sure yet what I am hoping to find, but relating it back to my first reflection I want to instill values on the future generation to take care of our land and to take the initiative to change their lifestyle.
